Harry Potter
At Pen:
An Open Letter to Jo on Harry Potter’s 40th Birthday.
To the magical woman,
I think when you started writing the 'Harry Potter' series, you had no idea how it would have such a huge impact on people worldwide. You probably had no idea how it would change the lives of a whole generation of teenagers and how it would make their lives a whole lot better. Because trust me, it did.
The day 'the boy' started living, escaping danger, we did too. We lived the whole magical life vicariously through him. We received our Hogwarts letter, we went to Diagon Alley, we attended Hogwarts, we practiced magic and we grew up with them.
To be honest, someone saying that I love 'Harry Potter' would be an understatement. I have read the books so many times that I have lost count. 'Harry Potter' is my childhood. It made me who I am today and how I am. It made my childhood magical and rememberable in ways that I cannot express. It also taught me so many things. It taught me that there is bravery inside everyone, you just need to look closely. It taught me that it is okay to be afraid. It taught me that you can find friends in unlikely places and that the ones who love us will be there by our side.
It taught me to be brave like Harry. It taught me that there are so many people in the world who don't have the luxuries others do, so we should appreciate what we have and be thankful for those.
It taught me that it's okay to be book nerd like Hermione. It taught me that books can make you intelligent and that reading them was not a bad thing.
It taught me to be a best friend like Ron. It taught me that no matter what happens one should always trust their best friend and be by their side, no matter what.
It taught me to be different like Luna, independent like Ginny, good like Neville, selfless like Snape, and so much more.
And all of this because you had decided not to give up even after being rejected by publishing houses. So most of all, you taught me not to give up. You taught me that I should believe in my work even when others don't. You taught me to write what I imagined and trust that it would be loved by atleast someone.
Jo, thank you for my childhood. Thank you for providing me with the silver lining in every bad situation because I had the books to turn to. Thank you for giving me an escape and for giving me a story that will last a lifetime. Even at 19, I still obsess over the world you created and I still use it to escape the new stressors college has given me.
Thank you Jo, for everything. Thank you for creating a whole new world for others. Thank you for making it possible to believe in magic. Thank you for not giving up.
With love,
A forever potterhead.
P.S. But this does not mean I am not angry with you for what you did to Sirius, Dumbledore, Fred, Lupin and Tonks. That was harsh and hit me like a ton of bricks. It still makes me cry.
