International Day of Peace

At Pen:

International Day of Peace is celebrated on 21st September every year to recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace.

US created the International Day of Peace in 1981 to celebrate the opening of the US General Assembly. It is said that this day was first celebrated in 1982 & was known to be celebrated every year on the 3rd Tuesday of September until 2002, after that US announced that it would be celebrated every year on 21st of September & gradually this became it's permanent date.

On the International Day of Peace every year, people devote themselves with the motive of bringing up non violence, peace & togetherness.

Since it's establishment, Peace Day has been known to be a day when people are always spotted together. Around a million people have contributed to bring up peace & non violence in every parts of the world. Many programs & occasions are held to celebrate this day like:

■ Lighting candles

■ Peace walks

■ Art exhibitions promoting peace

■ Tree planting for peace

■ Peace prayers

■ Picnics for Peace

A symbol highly associated with the International Day of Peace is the "WHITE DOVE". According to Christianity & Islam a white dove is a symbol of Peace. The dove also represents the popular phrase “hope for peace”...

Come, this year let us all promote peace & non violence by maybe making small contributions like drawing a poster, making a chart, creating a dove by origami & etc. After all we all remember Ashoka, the great emperor!! Don't we??
