World Alzheimer's Day

At Pen:

World Alzheimer's Day

Forgetting your loved one is worse than losing them.

Alzheimer's Day, is marked to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.

My mom and I used to sit across dinner table,

She taught me love while binding rotis in foil inside casserole.

She budded in me seeds of compassion, to think about others besides loving myself first.

She taught her lessons and today she seems to have forgotten them ,

She has greyed hair, wrinkled smile .

She remembers me as her nurse, someone accompanying her all the time.

I keep longing for her to love me the way she used to.

But the Alzheimer's in her has started to take everything I wanted us to cherish all our life's.

My dad has lost all hope,

Since she considered him a stranger,

A rude little man , someone similar to our arrogant neighbor.

He plays the tunes they danced to,

Hoping for some sorcery to happen.

She pleads to lower them , sighing she lost her lover,

The song reminds her of the horrifying separation.

He dies a little every time she refuses to let him touch her.

This is maybe our fate , maybe our way now to own her,

Me a caring nurse to her.

And he still as an arrogant stranger.
